Frequently asked questions

Why do we need another body?
British Muslims now number close to 4 million in the UK.  And are diverse in every conceivable way, from ethnicity, schools of thought, to socio-economic status and geography. We want to engage all parts of the country, particularly those who are under-represented
We see ourselves as offering something new and fresh while also adding to an already rich ecosystem of Muslim networks and organisations doing great work. We aren’t here to compete with existing groups but to collaborate, add value where we can and raise our collective voices.

What will the structure be?
We’re a not for profit civil society group and are in the process of registering as such. We are setting up clear and transparent governance with independent board oversight. Most of our work will be based around expert working groups covering key sectors including business and the economy, education, health and wellbeing, criminal justice and reform, Islamophobia, racism and extremism, arts and culture, young people, infrastructure and leadership development.

How are you funded?
Until now, our funding has come in the form of sponsorship for events and private donations from  our Founding Members. We aim to secure longer-term funding from within British Muslim communities. In order to ensure our independence we will not take money from the Government.

What is the BMN’s relationship with the government, if any?
We are an independent network and will remain so. We have written to all of the main political parties, introducing them to the British Muslim Network. We will seek to engage all relevant sectors of British society, including the government and opposition political parties.

Where is BMN based?
BMN’s Founding Members come from all parts of the UK and we will endeavour to work with communities from across the UK. We want to make sure that British Muslims from all walks of life can feed into BMN.
